Photographing Against Disappearance
Photographing Against Disappearance is an ongoing documentary project made across Palestine between 2022 and 2025. Through landscapes, homes, refugee camps and agricultural spaces, the work traces how Palestinian communities maintain relationships with places shaped by occupation, displacement and continuous attempts at erasure. Working primarily in black-and-white 35mm film, Ali Asfour returns to places over time, attending to the everyday: homes, streets, gestures and spaces of gathering where identity is quietly practiced beyond the spectacle of crisis. Made from within the conditions it reflects, the project is both a record of what remains and an intervention against disappearance.

Bio
Ali Asfour is a Palestinian analog film photographer based between Ramallah, Bethlehem and Amman. His work is shaped by life under occupation, where movement is regulated, memory is contested and history is continuously rewritten. Working slowly in black-and-white film, he photographs the everyday: homes, streets, gestures, landscapes and moments of waiting, with a focus on how Palestinian life persists beyond spectacle and crisis. Rooted in questions of identity, oral history and the archive, his practice approaches photography as a counter-archival act: not proof for institutions, but a refusal of disappearance.
