Unhealed Beneath Grieving Skies
Unhealed Beneath Grieving Skies is a collaborative, multi-layered project made with Bangladeshi women who returned from the Gulf after surviving exploitation and violence as migrant domestic workers. Through photography and expanded visual practice, Sumi Anjuman examines the psychological and social aftermath of migration, tracing how economic precarity, patriarchal oppression and systemic abuse leave lasting marks on identity, belonging and memory. Rather than documenting suffering alone, the work creates a space where testimony, visual imagination and resistance meet, confronting the structures that continue to turn women’s labour and lives into sites of erasure.

Bio
Sumi Anjuman is a Bangladeshi artist, photographer and educator based in Dhaka. Shaped by the gendered realities of Bangladesh’s conservative social landscape, her practice uses photography as a form of quiet resistance, centring voices long silenced and confronting structures of violence and erasure. Working through a collaborative approach she describes as “healing through creation,” she combines documentary image-making with stitching, text, archival fragments and moving image to build layered visual narratives. She teaches at Counter Foto and holds a master’s degree in Photography & Society from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague.
